The Acton Public Library is pleased to announce that
the grant from the Old Saybrook Ambulance Association
for online Medical Databases has been renewed.
In front of Acton's Medical Information Center are:

The Association and the Library seek to identify, investigate, define, and meet the medical informational needs of the Old Saybrook community. They put a high priority on the utilization of new technologies when these may be used to enhance traditional methods and to develop new procedures of information services and delivery. The Acton Public Library and the Old Saybrook Ambulance Association, Inc. formed a medical information partnership to empower the users to make well-informed medical decisions. The Old
Saybrook community depends on the Medical Information Center, since there is no other resource of this type in the local area.
The Consumer Health Complete™ (CHC), the new software available at the Center, is the single most comprehensive resource for consumer-oriented health content. It is designed to support patients' information needs and foster an overall understanding of health-related topics. CHC provides content covering all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to the many perspectives of complementary, holistic, and integrated medicine...
The Acton Public Library serves the young adult population by offering the Teen Health and Wellness database access. Ties database was chosen as the Best New Product, 2007 Readers' Choice Awards. Of particular interest to teens is the Truth About Series that covers such subject areas as: Abuse, Alcohol, Death and Dying, Divorce, Drugs, Eating Disorders, Family Life, Fear and Depression, Rape, Sexual Behavior and Unplanned Pregnancy, Smoking, and Violence.
In addition, the Center provides Magill's Medical Guide, in electronic and print form is unlike any reference work published before it. Five volumes, including 3,552 pages, 1,107 articles, and 644 sidebars, hundreds of photos, illustrations and graphs and appendixes, indexes and resource listings. The databases can be accessed by clicking the links on the left.
Along with the databases, the Old Saybrook Ambulance Association, Inc. Grant purchased several titles that should be of interest to all. They are: Encyclopedias of Health and Well-Being of Seniors, Public Health and Aging: an Introduction to Maximizing Well-Being and Function, Many Faces of Health: Competent and Well-Being in Old Age, The Library of Nutrition, Cancer and Modern Science World, Girl's Health, The Library of Sexual Health, Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, Family Structure and an Effective Health Behavior, Complete Guide to Health and Well-Being, The American Dietetic Association:, A Complete Guide to Food and Nutrition, Manual of Medical Information Home Edition, Taking Care of Your Child: A Parents Guide, and Yale University School of Medicine: a
Patient's Guide to Medical Tests.
These can all be found at the Acton Public Library Medical Information Center found in the reference area of the Library.
