State Planners Award Park Committee:
Reclaimed Landfill Bolsters Welfare of Community
November 4, 2009
OLD SAYBROOK, Connecticut (November 4, 2009) – The Connecticut Chapter of the American Planning Association (“CCAPA”) has selected the Founders Memorial Park Ad Hoc Committee as the recipient of the 2009 Community Development Award. The award will be presented at a CCAPA luncheon to be held on Dec. 4th at the Inn at Middletown.
Recognizing that the Town properties of the former Coulter Street Landfill and those donated by the Clarke Family are an unrealized municipal asset, the Town of Old Saybrook, through the Board of Selectmen, established a Committee to develop a public park from which to view and explore Old Saybrook’s North Cove and the Connecticut River’s coastal wetlands with special regard for the combined goals of recreation, education, and conservation.
The Community Development Award, one of eight categories of annual awards, is given for a project, program or initiative that bolsters the social and economic welfare of the community. The Committee was nominated by Alicia Betty, Project Manager, from the Trust for Public Land.
