Shhh…I’ve got a Secret
A secret…
So harmless at first
Day after day it weighs you down,
It blankets your nose so you cannot smell
It blankets your ears so you cannot hear
It blankets your mouth so you cannot speak
You are helpless, defenseless, and vulnerable
It captures you so it’s like you live in another world
Suddenly, a man and his apprentice come up
Startling you with a question that pulls the blanket away
It feels exhilarating
He poses you a question you thought no one would ask
A chance to finally pay off your debt,
A Chance to have someone help bear the burden
All at once, you can finally see the light
At midnight, you walk down the quiet and sleeping streets,
A single candle invites you to step out of the dark night
The pawnbroker invites you in to tell you his ways
He asks for your secret, for a sum of gold
So much money,
You let out a loud sigh
And begin with a drink in your hand,
The small apprentice in the corner writes this
In a big black book
At the end, the blanket is lifted
A smile stretches across your face as you claim the money
You are already planning to spend it
Laughing as you walk out
Seeing the look on the landlord’s face
When he receives the money
People stare because you are like a new person
A smile plastered on your face
All because of a secret
That now only feels like a feather
Or a soup
Simmering on the back burner
Ready to be forgotten
You are free
